Philips Brings Android Across the Range

Philips (MMD) extended its booth this year to show how its range has developed over recent years.

The main news at the show was a new Q Line that includes the important Android OS and also UltraHD which is now extended from 75″ and 86″ and now comes down to include 65″, 55″ and 49″ along with direct backlights. The Q Line is intended to offer good value and didn’t previously include SoC capability. The 50 series has 410 cd/m² of output.

Philips Q line now supports Android.

As well as the change in the Q Line, the mid-range D series sees an extension of sizes to 86″ and 98″, both with 500 cd/m² of output from IPS panels. A feature on the new D-Line is the inclusion of a mini-PCI Express slot that can be used to integrate a 4G LTE wireless module to allow remote management or analytics. There is also a FailOver function that can allow ‘background’ content to be played between meetings, or to deal with occasions when a media player fails. The monitor also allows backlight brightness reduction where power consumption is of concern.

Philips has extended its high brightness range from the existing 75BDL3003H 75″ model to now include a 55″ unit. The 55BDL3002H has 2,500 cd/m² at FullHD resolution and includes an OPS slot. It is rated for 24/7 and both landscape and portrait operation and has 5,000:1 contrast, which makes it a VA panel. There are video and data inputs (VGA, DisplayPort 1.2 and DVI-D as well as dual HDMI). Power consumption is 368W.

The company is continuing to try to develop its LED business. The company has a policy of trying to offer easy installation, making 16:9 cabinets that are relatively easy to use to replace 55″ video wall monitors and the 55DBL9018L has a 54.2″ diagonal with panel resolution of 640 x 360, meaning a FullHD display in a 3 x 3 configuration. Brightness is 1,000 cd/m² or 800 when calibrated. The LEDs have microgrid shaders to improve contrast and the pitch is 1.8mm. The company plans to offer 2.9mm, 3.9mm and 4.9mm pitch in 27″ and 44″ cabinets. 1.5mm will be in a 27″ cabinet.

There was a ‘technology demo’ of a possible future product that has 1.2mm pitch, which means a FullHD display over a 110″ diagonal and Philips is looking at marketing the display with a bezel as a full unit including a driving computer.

Philips was also showing the hospitality TV segment which also supports Android so there is a commonality between the hospitality, healthcare and digital signage. As we have reported in the past, one of the key messages from Philips in the past is that the CMND remote management and CMS platform works across all three areas.
