What They Say
Panasonic said at the Virtual CES that it has a new AR HUD that can provide 3D information to drivers. The company uses a PRIZM mnemonic to
- Precise placement – Optimal image positioning
- Reflection – AI smart optical graphic road overlays for object / sign detection
- Intuitive – Discriminates / prioritizes user focus on what is ahead, e.g. is that a deer or a box in the road?
- Zonal- UX optimized field-of-view organizationally displays objects along the road
- Mission Control – Dynamic imaging that brings visibility and the roadway together
The company said that the technology depends on eye-tracking to put the image at the optimum position for the driver and has a field of view that is more than 10° x 4° and has a virtual distance of 10m. The system compensates for vibration to lock images onto the environment. The resolution is said to be ‘4K’ using laser and holography technology from Envisics, with static near-field cluster information and far-field image plane for AR graphic overlay.
What We Think
If the actual result looks as good as the image supplied by Panasonic, the system looks very attractive. Chris certainly liked the concept when he reported on it. Envisics Shows Impressive Augmented Reality Auto HUD. Readers will remember that the exec that Chris spoke to, Jamieson Christmas, was previously with Two Trees Photonics, which was acquired by Daqri, but which then failed. (Jaguar HUD Uses Analog Holographic Projector/Behind the Daqri Failure). It’s really good to see technology which has shown promise for so long come under the wing of a major player in the segment.
