OTT TV services in the US generated $11.9 billion in 2017, a year-on-year growth of 41%, according to Convergence Research Group. The firm also expects revenues to climb this year, up to $16.6 billion—another 40% growth year-on-year—and even further in 2020, up to $27.6 billion. On the other hand, cable, satellite and telco TV revenues only grew by 1% last year, reaching $107.6 billion. The company has predicted that this number will soon begin to decline gradually, down to $107.4 billion in 2018 and $106.9 billion in 2020.
Pay TV subscribers dropped by 3.66 million in 2017, with a further 3.72 million predicted to be shed in 2018. The company also estimates that 32.13 million homes in the US were without a conventional TV package by the end of 2017, a little over 26% of all households. That means a further 4.57 million homes have cut the cord since 2016. The firm predicts that 36.76 million households, or 29.6%, will be OTT only from the end of 2018.
