OTT Content Available Throughout EU

When visiting another EU country, citizens often cannot access content paid for in their own country. Under new rules, approved by the European Parliament last week, restrictions will been removed and online subscription content will be accessible in another EU country. However, there will still be checks to avoid breach of copyright and the visit to the other country must only be temporary. The law needs to be formally approved and member states have nine months after that to bring the regulations into force.

Analyst Comment

It really annoys me! I pay lots of money to Sky to get its sports coverage, and it has an OTT mechanism to watch on a phone or PC, but the company works really hard to stop access from outside the UK. I have used a variety of VPNs and other techniques, but they still block. Let’s hope this is one of the laws that the UK adopts after Brexit! (BR)
