Osram launches new Quantum Dot LED ‘to redefine lighting’

What They Say

It’s not a display, but I was intrigued to note Optics.org reporting that Osram has a new lighting LED, the Osconiq E 2835 CRI 90 (QD – quantum dot) that uses the firm’s own ‘in-house’ QDs to give a high colour rendering white light with efficiency of over 200 lm/W. The Osconiq E 2835 CRI 90 (QD) is available in a color temperature range of 2200 to 6500 K

A notable feature of quantum dots from the company is that they are encapsulated in a protective package that makes them more robust, protecting them from moisture and other external influences. This encapsulation technology makes it possible to use the small particles in demanding “on chip” operation within an LED.

What We Think

I used to get to see Osram at Electronica and Productronica events in Munich and it’s a shame to miss those now! The firm had interesting developments in LED. I was impressed by the 200 lm/W figure although I haven’t been looking at LED efficacy for a long time.

Back some years, Osram signed a deal with Nanoco for QDs (Nanoco and Osram Continue Work on QD-LEDs) It also said at one time that it was developing a colour conversion system that wasn’t QDs. Seeing the reference to Nanoco reminded me that I hadn’t seen much from the firm recently. It said recently that it has five customers now and is working on eight different materials and recently raised cash for its on-going needs. The firm is continuing in its patent case with Samsung (David vs Goliath or ……?), The firm announced early in July that it has signed an agreement for a new nanomaterial with an “undisclosed Asian chemical company”.
