Oppo Unveils Next-Generation Under-Screen Camera Technology

What They Say

Oppo said in a press release that it has a new under-display camera (UDC) that is claimed to maintain the performance of the display. It says it has improved performance by:

  • A new pixel geometry that maintains 400ppi display in the camera area and has smaller pixels
  • A new transparent ‘wiring’ material with thinner width (by 50%)
  • Rather than using a single circuit to drive dual pixels in the UDC area, it has a circuit for each pixel.
  • There is a compensation circuit in the UDC area that is said to boost display life by 50%

Oppo also said that it had made a submission to the IEC for a possible standard for UDCs covering display transmittance, reflectance, uniformity, Gamma correction, color shift, and brightness decay.

What We Think

Hmmm… Of course, reducing the pixel size in an OLED display is likely to impact brightness or lifetime. Oppo provided an image taken with the camera that looked quite good, but to really know what the impact of the new developments is, we’ll have to see some good quality product reviews. In the image below of the pixels, they certainly look significantly smaller in the area above the camera on the right. (BR)
