What They Say
Oppo has shown the Engadget blog a rollable smartphone that can change from a landscape 6.7″ size to a squarer ‘tablet-like’ 7.4″ diagonal, with the software automatically compensating. It’s still ‘a concept’, but being very actively developed, with 122 patents applied for, 12 for the scrolling mechanism.
Update – GSMArena said that it had confirmed BOE as the supplier for the rollable OLED.
What We Think
It’s quite a few years now since I first saw a truly foldable smartphone prototype at the private suite of a panel maker during CES. I was impressed by the concept of a folding display then, especially of the “TriFold” tablet concept. However, I’m intrigued by the idea of the edge scrolling designs which seem to make more sense if the issues of dirt ingress and damage can be dealt with. (BR)
