What They Say
Oppo and OnePlus announced at MWC that they will introduce high capacity smartphone chargers that can charge a 4,500 mAh battery in 15 minutes, with 150W (20V @ 7.5A) of charging power. The smartphones will have two cells that can accept 5V @15A to each, using charge pumps. OnePlus expects to launch it in Q2 and said that the chargers will use gallium nitride technology so that chargers are only 2.3″x 2.2″ (58mm x 55mm) in size and comparable to current 65W adaptors.
The company’s “battery health engine” will keep a battery at 80% maximum charge level after 1,600 recharge cycles, the company says. A “battery health algorithm” and “battery healing technology” control the charging current and protect the electrodes against degradation, according to Oppo.
What We Think
The rate of charging is not head on for a display newsletter, but I thought this was interesting, although I do worry a bit about this kind of technology. When the ‘exploding battery’ issue seemed to be a problem a few years ago, someone pointed out to me that a ‘chemical store of energy’ describes a battery, but it also describes a bomb. 😉 (BR)
