Omnivision Unveils OV02E: A High-Performance 1080p Image Sensor with Staggered HDR for Thin Bezel Devices

Omnivision has announced the release of the OV02E 1080p full high-definition (HD) image sensor. This sensor is specifically designed for devices with thin bezel designs, including mainstream and premium notebooks, tablets, and IoT devices. It offers features such as staggered high dynamic range (HDR) and artificial intelligence (AI) integration to enhance video quality and extend battery life.

The OV02E image sensor is a compact single-die solution that delivers high-quality video performance while keeping the bill of materials (BOM) cost low. One notable feature is the staggered HDR support, which effectively addresses backlighting issues during video conference calls. This ensures better image quality by preventing overexposure of the background. The sensor also includes ultra-low power mode with AI functionality, allowing for efficient always-on capabilities.

Despite its small form factor, the OV02E sensor packs multiple features suitable for devices with a screen-to-body ratio of less than 3mm Y size, such as tablets and wearables. It employs a 1.12-micron backside-illuminated (BSI) pixel based on the PureCel Plus architecture developed by Omnivision. This architecture ensures advanced pixel sensitivity and quantum efficiency. The sensor supports 2-megapixel full HD 1080p video at 60 frames per second (fps), and it offers multiple camera synchronization for machine vision and IoT applications requiring depth detection. The OV02E also features an always-on capability with an ultra-low power state compatible with the mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) and serial peripheral interface (SPI).

Samples of the OV02E image sensor are currently available, and it is expected to enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2023.
