What They Say
OLED Info quoted some data from Omdia on OLED sales in IT applications. The report detailed that Omdia numbered the volume of notebook displays shipped in 2021 as 5.58 million with volume up 389%. Samsung Display is said to have 84%, LG Display has 10% and BOE, 5%. Overall, the notebook panel market was 280.85 million.
The Omdia data would suggest Samsung sales of around 4.7 million, but the firm is expected to make 9 million in 2022.
The firm forecast that penetration of OLEDs in notebooks could exceed 10% in five years.
What We Think
As long as no issues arise in lifetimes or image sticking, this level of penetration is certainly possible. Once they seen an OLED notebook, consumers will desire them. The rest is about price and reliability. If SDC boosts its capacity for QD OLED, that could also become a premium technology in this application. At the moment, the firm is only planning 55″, 65″ and 34″.
In terms of the overall OLED business, IT applications are only expected to be somewhere around 5.5% of all OLED area shipped in 2022 according to DSCC. (BR)
