What They Say
Hat-tip to Dave Haynes of Sixteen-nine.net for spotting that Tay Taehoon Kim of Omdia had posted some interesting data on LED displays on his LinkedIn page. The market grew 17.3% on a quarterly basis and by 40.8% year on year, with China dominating the consumption with its share of all purchases going from 58.3% in Q2 to 63.7% in Q3. Outside China, growth was just 1.9%, although Absen grew 41.8% outside the country, whereas Samsung slipped back because of supply issues.
Small pixel pitch products COB (chip-on-board_ modules received more development as they are used in high value growth areas such as broadcasting. Preparations for the Beijing Winter Olympics helped boost the segment.
What We Think
It’s amazing that one country should so dominate a tech industry. I’m reminded that when I started working as an analyst more than 25 years ago, the rule of thumb was that for any new high tech market, the US and Europe would probably account for 40% each, with 20% in Japan. Hmmm… that is a long way out of date these days! (BR)
