Olympic Stadium Berlin Gets Digital Signage Upgrade

What They Say

Invidis reports that the Olympic Stadium in Berlin is going through a major refurbishment in preparations for hosting at least six games in the 2024 Euros football championship. The total cost will be €20 million, with the digital signage costing €2 million, €0.5 million in 2022 and the balance in 2023.

A full colour LED floodlight system has already been installed and was used to support to show ‘rainbow colours’ when UEFA stopped the Munich stadium from doing that.

What We Think

The stadium was really built to support athletics and suffers from being very big and with a big distance (the track) between the spectators and the pitch for soccer matches. The result is that unless there is a really big crowd, there is little atmosphere in the stadium and this is often pointed to as a reason that the football club that uses the ground, Hertha Berlin, is not that successful compared to Bayern Munich and the clubs to the West and North of the country. There is also a theory that football clubs in capital cities tend to be less successful than those in second level cities in most countries, unless they were supported by the state or by the rulers of the state. Still, that topic might be a bit outside the remit of Display Daily! (BR)
