Plastic and flexible screens are the next evolution of display technology, says IDTechEx, and will be made possible through OLEDs.
In a new report (paid), IDTechEx asserts that the first smartphone with a flexible display will be shipped in 2017. The market for plastic and flexible AMOLED displays, in this scenario, will be worth $16 billion by 2020.
Accompanying the rise of plastic and flexible screens will be a shift away from glass substrates, towards plastic units such as polyimide. Glass-based displays will remain important in specific applications, where scale-up and cost reduction are still challenges – such as TVs. IDTechEx expects many vendors to ‘hedge their bets’ with quantum dot LCD TVs, as a cheaper alternative to OLED models. Despite this, OLED TV panels are forecast to have a 25% CAGR over the next decade.
