OLED to Move Down in Smartphones

The ET Times of Korea reports data from UBI Research that forecasts that OLED penetration will reach 62% of the smartphone market by 2021 with LCD dropping back each year. Samsung is reported to be increasing its production of rigid OLEDs for low to middle range phones. At the moment, OLEDs are only used by Chinese brands in their high end smartphones, while Samsung is expected to extend its use of flexible displays from its high end phones to the mid-range.

The paper quote UBI as saying that 70% of OLED smartphones in 2021 will be based on flexible OLEDs.

Analyst Comment

One of the factors in the move of OLEDs down into lower smartphones is that depreciation is nearly accounted for in Samsung’s rigid OLED lines, so the company can reduce prices. (BR)
