That is a big headline to live up to but according to the latest findings from UBI Research, the OLED panel market for tablet PCs is poised for a significant upswing, with forecasts predicting a rise from 12 million units in 2024 to a robust 28.4 million by 2028. This marks an impressive average annual growth rate of 24.1%.
Previously, the market had seen modest figures, with 1.3 million units shipped in 2022 and an uptick to 1.8 million in 2023. However, the landscape is set to dramatically change with Apple’s forthcoming introduction of OLED technology in its 2024 iPad models. This move is expected to lead to a six to seven times increase in OLED tablet market size within the year, as industry giants Samsung Display and LG Display gear up to meet the demand for the new iPad-oriented tablets, focusing on 11-inch and 12.9-inch models respectively.
The ripple effect of Apple’s decision is triggering a wave of investments across the industry with firms eager to exploit OLED’s potential not just for tablets but across a range of IT devices. Samsung Display and BOE are expanding their manufacturing capabilities with significant investments in the 8.6G IT line. LG Display is bolstering its financial position through a capital increase to fund further IT line expansions, including the divestiture of its Guangzhou LCD line.
