What They Say
TrendForce said that it expects the penetration of OLED into the smartphone market to get over 50% in 2023, up from 42%. (This would be on a unit basis, I assume as revenues are already over 50% – editor)
In an article, the firm described the features such as additional auxiliary electrodes, microlens arrays and colour filter on encapsulation (COE) that are used to boost efficiency. It also looks at developments in more efficient materials such as TADF. It reviews some of the patent landscape.
The firm also covers the ‘wrinkling’ at the edges of PI substrates as size gets larger and looks at the reasons that Samsung has tried to move to Vertical Thermal Evaporation (VTE) with Ulvac. It points out that other firms are working with Tokki to try to improve horizontal deposition.
In summary, the firm thinks that the next couple of years will be critical for the development of OLED in IT applications. The plan by Apple to use OLEDs in iPads and MacBooks sometime from 2024 or after is a significant factor.
What We Think
The next couple of years are certainly going to see plenty of stories (probably from The Elec) about the challenges of Samsung’s G8 fab (SDC Talks Up its ‘Disruptive Display Industry Innovation’), I think! (Samsung Display to manufacture single stack OLED first in Gen 8 line) for example! (BR)
