New York Passes Right to Repair Law

What They Say

The New York State legislature has passed a “Right to Repair’ bill that means that from mid-2023 brands that sell digital electronic products in the stat will have to make parts, tools, information, and software available to consumers and independent repair shops. Formally, the decision has to be signed off by the governor to come into effect, but this is expected to happen.

What We Think

This is probably more important for small repair suppliers than consumers. As we linked to a week or so ago, the NYT pointed out that self repairs don’t always work out! (you need a subscription, but in summary, the reporter tried Apple’s home repair system but managed to destroy his display in the process).

As a keen repairer myself, it frustrates me when I am unable to get service manuals or parts to repair things around the house. YouTube is a great source of information – this weekend I used it to find out how to fix some Duplo trains for some young family members. I managed to get two out of three going and will keep the other one for spares. (BR)
