General Interface Solution’s chairman Chou Hsien-ying recently told Digitimes that the company will begin shipments of its third-generation ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor technology during the second half of 2018. The hardware will first appear in smartphones due for launch in early 2019, Chou said.
Separately, industry sources informed Digitimes that GIS is expecting significant revenue growth in September as production for the 2018 iPhone range — which features the company’s touch sensors — ramps up.
GIS’ revenues for the third quarter of 2018 are predicted to grow 20-30% year-on-year, to reach NT$28-30 billion ($912.5-977.7 million). Touch solutions for tablets will account for 55-65% of the company’s sales, while modules for handsets will account for 25-35%, according to Digitimes’ sources.
Chou added that under-display fingerprint sensor hardware will be the most sought-after of smartphone-related technology next year and GIS will continue to invest in it. More handset makers are expected to adopt the tech during the second half of 2019, contributing to a growth in the company’s sales for the year.
