New DSCC Report on IJP

What They Say

DSCC published a release to highlight its new report on Inkjet Printing technology for display manufacture. It covers both emitter deposition and colour conversion.

From 2020 to 2025, IJP display capacity is expected to rise at a 137% CAGR to 7.1 million m² in 2025 as seen in the chart below. JOLED, Samsung Display and China Star will drive the growth and IJP fab equipment spending in 2023 alone will exceed $3 billion on new fabs at China Star and Samsung Display.

  • JOLED is already making IJP OLEDs
  • CSOT is building a new fab for IJP
  • Samsung will begin mass production of QD-OLEDs using inkjet printing for the color conversion layers later this year

What We Think

The perennial problem for technology development in the display business is that of the moving target. It looks to me as though the potential savings of moving to IJP seem to have shrunk in the two decades+ that we have reported on developments. On there are still risks to trying to switch to the technique.

Still, there is real production happening and that’s very different from most of that time. On the other hand, as the chart suggests, the market will be dominated by Samsung and its colour conversion. (BR)
