What They Say
The Korea Herald reported data, attributed to Omdia on the TV market globally and said that 92.6 million sets were sold globally in the first six months of this year. However it also said that they were worth $475 million – which would be $5 each – so we can discount that number! The volume is said to be down 6.6% on an annual basis. Some other highlights:
- Samsung remains the leader with 31.5% share, up 0.5 points on last year followed by LG, TCL, Hisense and Sony. (Details in our chart)
- Samsung’s flagship Neo QLED TV sold 4.64 million units in the January-June period, a 16.3% jump from a year earlier. Since its debut in 2017, its accumuled sales exceeded 36.3 million units.
- In the high-end TV segment, priced $2,500 or higher, Samsung dominated with 53.6% of the sales, followed by LG with 21.5%, Sony with 17.2%.
- LG maintained its dominant market position in the OLED market by selling 1.69 million units, about 62% of the total OLED TV shipments.
- Sales of its bestselling 40-inch TVs surged 81.3% during the same period, while 70″ or larger models saw a 17% increase in their combined shipments.
- Since LG started rolling out OLED TVs 10 years ago, now more than one in three LG TVs sold are OLED models. Of the total TV sales globally, the high-end display models make up almost 10%.
What We Think
Nothing really surprising here, but Samsung has done well to actually boost its share over the last year. Once you get to around a third of the market, it gets very hard to increase share because of channel challenges and conflicts. (BR)
