Near half of Korean display equipment makers report loss in Q2

What They Say

The Elec reported that nearly half of South Korean equipment makers (13 or 30) have recorded operating losses in Q2 2021 because of conservative investment spending by Samsung Display and LG Display. Although many were down, Wonik IPS saw sales up 42.6% to $371 million, with profits of $86 million, up 96.7% (although only 15% came from display equipment. The firm said it expects sales to be 25% down over the year as a whole.

Toptec’s operating loss rate was 109.5%, the worst out of the companies. The firm has in recent years lost Samsung Display as a customer due to alleged technology leaks according to The Elec.

What We Think

It’s tough to be in the capital equipment business with huge swings from feast to famine. That’s hard when you need a lot of specialist knowledge, expertise and experience. (BR)

DSSC published this forecast in May, showing a drop in spending this year in the key area, for Korea, of OLED investment.
