What They Say
According to SuperData Research, a Nielsen company, more than 1 million Oculus Quest 2 headsets were sold in Q4 2020, which was a new record for a single quarter. The only device to surpass that was the smartphone-powered Samsung Gear VR, which sold 1.4M units in Q4 2016.
- By comparison, SuperData estimates that PlayStation VR sold 125,000 units during Q4, followed by the Valve Index at 61,000 units, and Oculus Rift/Rift S at 55,000.
- Given the Quest 2’s success, the research firm predicts that standalone devices will make up an estimated 87% of new VR headset sales this year, not including “light mobile” headsets.
- In January, Facebook Reality Lab head Andrew Bosworth confirmed that the Quest 2 is Facebook’s fastest-growing VR headset. In a blog post, Bosworth said it surpassed the first Quest’s number of monthly active users in only seven weeks.
- Facebook and Valve don’t provide sales figures, though Mark Zuckerberg alluded to the Quest 2’s success in a Q4 earnings call. The CEO said more than 60 Oculus developers are generating revenues in the millions of dollars, nearly double that from a few months ago.
What We Think
As I’ve said before, I haven’t found any VR applications compelling, although younger members of my family have done. The Quest 2 seems to have got a lot of things right and should set a new bar for competitive devices. (BR)
