Microsoft Shows Lumina 640 XL at MWC 2015

Windows Lumina 640 XL

For the first time, Microsoft has taken over the release of new mobile phones after its acquisition of Nokia’s mobile device activities. The Lumia 640 is a 5″ 1280 x 720 IPS LCD smartphone while the Lumia 640 XL sports a 5.7″ 1280 x 720 IPS display. From a display perspective this is on the lower end of the device spectrum. Both devices will be available by mid-2015 with a country by country roll out. The estimated street prices for the Lumia 640 will be around €139 (3G) and €159 (LTE), while the XL version will sell for €189 (3G) and €219 (LTE).

Microsoft also pushed Windows 10 with an expected release later in 2015. The new OS will support UltraHD, however the company was not able to confirm that it will also support higher resolutions. Microsoft offers the ability to combine several display monitors into one desktop with an expand function. However, expanding a UltraHD desktop over several UltraHD monitors will require a higher resolution from the PC side to drive the monitors at full resolution.

A feature of the new Windows 10 on the desktop is that arrangements of multiple display set ups (with particular applications in certain window sizes and places) can be saved and reloaded as workspaces for particular jobs and workflows.
