A Japanese start-up called Meleap claims that it has developed the world’s first augmented reality sport – and not an eSport, either. ‘Hado’ uses a head-mounted display to display the ‘arena’ and a smartwatch to detect controls – in this case, flinging a fireball at an opponent when a player thrusts his or her hands forwards. Other motions can ‘reload’ energy or cast a heal. The proprietary display itself is not see-through, but has a camera feed showing a player’s surroundings.
