Market launch for the world’s largest 8K display

What They Say

Invidis reported that the Sharp 120″ 8K 8M-B120C LED display is now shipping in the German market. (Sharp Launches New 120 inch 8K Display) The set was first seen at IFA in 2019 and later at ISE in 2020.

The monitor is rated for 16 hours per day use and has brightness of 600 cd/m² and contrast of 3500:1. The set has an HDMI 2.1 port for full support of 8K up to 48Gbps. The display can also be driven as four HDMI2.0a UltraHD displays.

What We Think

We wondered about pricing and couldn’t spot one in Germany. On the other hand, B&H in the US has it at the bargain price of just $240K. Apart from the trickiness of getting good yield on this kind of displays, there are other challenges. You normally need to find polarising film that is big enough, which can be tricky, as the seams can be visible if you try to join polarisers. They are also tricky to drive because of the capacitance of the screen electrodes. At the high bit rate of 8K, this problem gets worse. (BR)
