Looking Glass’s next product is a ‘holographic digital photo frame’

What They Say

Looking Glass of the US has a new digital photo frame that supports stereo display and that the company claims is ‘holographic’. The display costs $349 (or $199 on Kickstarter which is way beyond target with 2,668 backers).

What We Think

The Looking Glass display looked good when we saw it a couple of years ago, but it seems to have got a level of hype and support that goes beyond what it deserves. The one I saw at Siggraph was a very good autosteroscopic display. The firm also told us that its use of the thick glass on the surface of the display helps to give an enhanced sense of depth in the image. However, I haven’t seen it for a couple of years, so perhaps I’m missing something. On the other hand, my good friend and long time technology journalist, Alfred Poor says that one of his rules is that “Any display claiming to be holographic, never is”. (BR)
