What They Say
The 8K Association has, understandably, digging into the required bandwidth needed to transmit high quality (Estimating the Bitrate for 8K Videos When Encoding with HEVC and AV1). The Association has moved on to discussions with Spin Digital about how much bandwidth you need to transmit 8K at 60Hz and with 10 bit HDR encoding.
An article from the Association looks at the discussions about codecs and quality, but comes to the conclusion that good quality content can be transmitted at 40Mbps in optimally encoded with the HEVC codec, although 48Mbps may be the best level for live encoding.
Spin Digital has previously shown with Fraunhofer HHI that content encoded with the VVC codec at 25Mbps is the same as content encoded with HEVC at 50Mbps. That suggests that it might be possible to further reduce bitrates significantly, but at the moment VVC takes 20 times more computation than HEVC.
What We Think
The next test I’d like to see is with 120Hz content! (BR
