Lionsgate to Release First UHD Blu-ray Title in Dolby Vision

Lionsgate is to release its first UHD Blu-ray title in Dolby Vision format with its first release being Power Rangers, 2017 version. Besides Dolby Vision HDR picture quality, the disc will also include a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

It is Lionsgate’s first disc in the premium Dolby Vision HDR format. At CES in January, the Hollywood studio was confirmed as one of the launch partners for Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray discs but the time frame has slipped by a few months. Earlier this month, Sony Pictures confirmed that it will join on the Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray bandwagon in July. Lionsgate will release Power Rangers UHD Blu-ray disc on 27th June, and it can now be pre-ordered from Amazon.

Dolby Vision format is implemented as an enhancement layer on UHD Blu-ray discs, meaning that a HDR10 version is also stored on the disc. HDR10 is mandatory under the UHD Blu-ray standard so that the disc will be playable in all UHD Blu-ray players.

Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros will all support Dolby Vision on UHD Blu-ray. However. 21st Century Fox, Paramount and Disney/Pixar have not yet released any UHD Blu-ray titles.
