What They Say
LG Display has commissioned TÜV Rheinland and Intertek to endorse its OLED panels for gaming. TÜV has awarded the firm a “High Gaming Performance Gold certification” and Intertek has said it has certified “Qualified Superior Gaming Performance”.
Intertek said that the OLEDs are the ‘fastest display available today with a fast response time of less than 0.1 ms (0.0001 seconds) based on (a) GTG (Gray to Gray) measurement method’. The firm also said that the panels are ‘inverse ghosting free’ – highlighting that each frame is not affected by a previous one – an issue with LCDs.
What We Think
Nothing here that the industry didn’t know. I’m undecided about this kind of commissioned endorsement. Because money is changing hands, I’m not quite comfortable with the genuine independence of the result. (I’m not impugning the honesty of the testers, but if the sets didn’t get the certification, you wouldn’t hear about it, or the certification terms might be adjusted). On the other hand, in the past, LG Display has tried to persuade me of things simply by getting more and more of its own staff to repeat the claims, which is not desperately convincing, either.
If the testing firms were testing a lot of sets and publishing their test regimes, I’d be more persuaded. However, in my experience, TÜV has not a clue about how to market what it is doing. (BR)
