What They Say
LG issued a press release to say that it has made a ‘QNED Mini LED’ TV that it will unveil during the virtual CES next week. The LCD TVs will have up to 30,000 LEDs with up to 2,500 dimming zones at sizes of up to 86″ and refresh rates up to 120Hz. QD technology will also be in the range, along with LG’s Nanocell technology.
What We Think
LG remains committed to OLED as its most premium product, but needs to compete in LCD as well. Of course, the use of QNED MiniLEDs is probably intended to try to take away something from Samsung’s push to develop direct emissive QNEDs (rather than as backlights) (Samsung Display closer to commercializing QNED tech ). It also explains the registration of a QNED trademark by LG Electronics. (LG Electronics files for QNED trademark) Still, the use of QNEDs in backlights is a good way to enable the development of a real market for the technology which will certainly help the technology to develop.
