LG Faces Competition from Samsung in OLED Automotive Display Market

According to Digitimes Research, Samsung is snapping at the heels of LG in the production of OLED panels for automotive applications. While central information display (CID) products have been rolled out by both LG (15.4″) and Samsung (12.4″ and 14″), Samsung has also launched a 6.22″ flexible OLED panel for steering wheels, while LG has released a 12.3″ screen for the dashboard.

LG has been supplying OLED automotive panels to car-makers like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen since 2016, while Samsung has shipped OLED CIDs to Hyundai since May 2018 and 5.7″ OLED Full HD touch displays to Audi for the rear-seat entertainment systems found in its fourth-generation A8. Additionally, Digitimes Research estimates that, by the close of 2018, Samsung’s sub-6G OLED production capacity will be seven times that of LG’s. Samsung will also commence production on new lines at its A5 facility in Tangjeong, South Korea in 2020.

The publication indicates that this competition will spur on the continuing development of OLED display products for the automotive sector and push their average size above 12″.
