LG Display has announced it will showcase the latest OLED lighting products at Euroluce 2017 from April 4 to 9 in Milan, Italy.
Under the theme of “The Light of Inspiration,” LG Display will exhibit the unique values of OLED technology in lighting, which enable revolutionary and elegant lighting designs. In a dedicated exhibition hall, the company will showcase innovative OLED light panels, including flexible products; its history of collaboration with world-class designers; and the inspirations behind its current lineup.
The most eye-catching products on display are LG Display’s collaborations with Ross Lovegrove, one of the world’s leading industrial designers. Nicknamed ‘Captain Organic’ and a self-proclaimed ‘sculptor of technology,’ Lovegrove fully utilized OLED lighting technology to realize life-like lighting artworks that are inspired by the curves and patterns seen in underwater marine life.
Fascinated by what he calls the “innovation, innovation, innovation” of OLED lighting, Lovegrove said, “OLED lighting technology is revolutionary, since it is flexible, touchable and ecological.” Aiming to engage with audiences interested in the “luxury of technology,” he noted that OLED lighting is “inert and passive” and “not hot and aggressive.” He added that he chose to partner with LG Display to explore the benefits of OLED lighting, which creates illumination across a surface rather than from a point. “I am trying to think with LG Display in a modular way so that the product has an extended future,” Lovegrove said. “I make a module, which is very economical to make, but then you multiply that and you can make huge installations.”
LG Display also seeks to highlight the flexibility of its OLED light panels for the high-end residential and premium hospitality markets.
“At Euroluce 2017, we are showcasing innovative OLED light products that especially accentuate the flexibility of the technology – flexibility which cannot be mimicked by any other kind of light technology,” said Sung-Soo Park, Vice President and Head of OLED Light Business Division at LG Display. “LG Display, the leading OLED display maker, will transfer its success in the display industry into the nascent OLED lighting market.”
Exhibit Description:
Medusa
Calling his work “bio-luminescent,” Lovegrove said his intention is to bring OLED light alive. His design inspiration for the Medusa pendant luminaire was underwater creatures. The aim was to deliver the “aquatic, marine life experience I am trying to promote in my design,” Lovegrove said. The Medusa collection showcases one of the key advantages of OLED lighting – flexibility – as it is easy to handle even though it connects eight OLED panels. “There are not that many materials that can go that thin and that do not break,” Lovegrove said. A total of 15 objects will be exhibited.
Pyrosome
Inspired by a deep-sea creature called Pyrosome, these ceiling luminaires and down luminaire fixtures freely transform their shapes and emit their own light. “I want to create lighting that is optimistic, that is sun-capturing,” he said of the design. “The materials you make the object from are like light itself.” The fixtures, which resemble “biological marine architecture,” eliminate both UV and blue light risk. By mixing elegant design with cutting-edge technology, these luminaires express the flexibility and warm natural light of OLED. Seven pieces will be exhibited.
High-End Residential
With this collection, LG Display offers new concepts in high-end residential lighting, generating multiple opportunities for OLED integration with furniture, mirrors and other interior design elements. OLED shelves with transparent connection solutions are eye-catching products for high-end residences. OLED-embedded wine racks are not just functional products holding wines, they also add an element of glamorous, high-end luminescence to a room.
High-End Retail
LG Display’s differentiated design and retail display solution collection brings premium quality light to circular displays, cylindrical displays, diamond displays and square displays. Thanks to the evenness of the light, these modules exhibit maximum clarity, while the slimness of the OLED panels enable minimalist designs, illuminated by light of maximum clarity.
Partner’s Products
LG Display is also presenting some of its partners’ products at the exhibition. Artemide is showcasing a hybrid pendant type lighting which uses both LED and OLED as light sources, representing a change in the light design paradigm. Foibos is presenting a crystal chandelier highlighting OLEDs’ excellent light quality and unique design possibilities. And DESLABS is presenting WiNEOLED, which is lighting specifically designed for wine professionals and wine lovers. It allows them to analyze wines’ visual properties: color, transparency, intensity and drops.
