LG Display to launch large OLED panels with micro lens tech in 2024

What They Say

The Elec reports that LGD plans to use large OLEDs using microlens technology in 2024. The report said that the firm has solved an issue with mura by using an adhesive using micro-beads supplied by Sumitomo (although, bizarrely, the report talks about this being in ‘the backlight’. Let’s assume a translation malfunction).

The Elec said that Sony and LGE would not use the technology next year in sets.

What We Think

This is no real surprise as LG showed a sample bright panel at SID this year with microlens technology (SID’s 60th Anniversary – Optimism in the Face of Falling Panel Prices, Demand and Profitability (Part 1), but the information about Sumitomo seems new to me. LGD is switching to all OLED Ex for its TV and monitor panels and that should help next year. We’re still waiting to hear what better OLED materials can achieve. (BR)
