What They Say
LG Display said that it would show a new 48″ bendable OLED display that uses the display-based Cinematic Sound OLED technology an dis optimised for gaming. The display can be bent to 1000R (1m radius). The display has a new ‘ultra slim film exciter’ which is just 0.6mm thick, while it used to be 9mm in previous versions. The display has a variable refresh rate of 40 – 120Hz.
What We Think
Of course, this is just a panel and not a set. Historically, bendable sets have been shown and developed but never sold in any number, partly because there is usually a significant engineering cost (in adding motors etc). but users will typically use the facility only occasionally. On this basis, I can see one or two companies in the gaming segment making a curved OLED monitor/TV for gaming, but I don’t see it getting out of a small niche. LG Display also released a teaser video about its presence at CES, but it really doesn’t add much! (BR)
