LG Display Explains P-OLEDs, Plans Rollable TVs by 2017

LG Display has posted an article explaining some of the details behind its plastic OLED (P-OLED) technology, used on the G Watch R (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 36). The company also shared a roadmap for flexible OLEDs.

A P-OLED is made using a plastic (polyimide (PI)) substrate. The PI material remains stable at high temperatures and has chemical stability. PI films can be manufactured, enabling the curve in the G Watch R and enabling the elimination of bubbles and foreign substances. Displays using this technology can have a thin bezel, due to the use of LTPS transistors.

OLEDs require an encapsulation layer to protect them from moisture, dust and so on. LGD has produced a flexible barrier layer for its P-OLED displays. Additionally, foreign substances are prevented from entering by using Laser Source Uniformity technology, which detects alien substances and cracks.

In its flexible OLED roadmap, LGD details its plans for devices with this technology. Tablets and bendable phones will be produced in 2015/2016. From 2017, the company foresees foldable and rollable devices – including TVs – as well as use in automobiles.
