What They Say
The Elec reported comments from an LG Display executive, Lee Hyun-hoo, at an event in Busan, Korea, run by UBI Research. He said that the firm is considering whether to make panels for monitors using RGB or WOLED architectures. At present, it makes small OLEDs (and is developing up to G8.5) using RGB OLEDs and WOLEDs for TV panels. A key factor in the decision is said to be the target ppi, but no plan has been yet put in place for monitor panels.
Lee also highlighted that Samsung is endorsing OLED for TV as it is launching QD-OLED this year.
What We Think
WOLED would make some sense for monitors. One of the main disadvantages of the technology is that it is not very efficient, but power consumption is not a killer issue for monitors and brightness doesn’t have to be any higher than is already used in TV. The reduced efficiency does mean that for the same brightness, the OLED materials have to be driven harder, which could cause a challenge for WOLED image sticking in monitor applications that feature bright static images.
LG Electronics is currently using JOLED to supply a small number of monitor panels for specialist high end monitors. That decision, was doubtless made in the light of a lack of committment to monitor OLED panels by LGD. (BR)
