John Archer, writing for Forbes, has discovered that LG plans to launch an OLED HDR ‘solution’ this year.
OLED has been criticised recently, mainly by LG’s competitors who do not have their own OLED models. The most common issue raised is the fact that OLED technology – while very dark – is not bright enough to show the full range of HDR content, unlike LCD screens.
I don’t see [OLED solving its light issues] happening in less than three years”. He also noticed that while LCD TV brightness has climbed from 500 cd/m² to 800 cd/m² in 2014, OLED technology’s brightness has only climbed by about 50 cd/m² with each generation.
Danny Tack of TP Vision told Archer, “Meanwhile, Samsung representatives said that attempting to make OLED screens bright enough to fully display HDR is likely to ‘significantly’ impact lifespan.
Archer raised these issues at LG’s recent product launch for its premium TVs. It was here that Robert Taylor, LG UK’s product manager for home entertainment, mentioned the OLED HDR solution (we assume that this will be a TV). He said that more information will be revealed around the time of IFA in September. Additionally, Taylor said that HDR OLED will take priority for LG over HDR LCD.
