What They Say
Lenovo and its Motorola brand both showed rollable OLEDs at its recent Tech World Event. There was a new rollable concept smartphone and also a rollable notebook that can expand to a display that is higher than it is wide. Both products are just in the ‘concept’ phase.
What We Think
As we have said before, the concept of rollable is great, but the practicalities are tricky. There is a danger of scratching as the display goes into the case, the rolling has to be very tight to avoid devices that are too thick and while motorisation brings control, it adds complexity and moving parts. At the recent Intel event (Intel and Samsung are getting ready for ‘slidable’ PCs), JS Choi of Samsung was very careful in the way that he opened the display out, while Gelisinger of Intel was much less careful and the mechanism looked a lot less smooth.
