What They Say
The Broadcast Bridge reported a talk by Gary Feather at the HPA Tech Retreat in which he talked about the developments in virtual production made possible by the drop in LED pricing in the last decade. He estimates that the value of the market is around $68 million for this application. He highlights the challenges because the LEDs are not ‘persistent displays’ so there can be challenges in videoing them if they are not correctly driven.
Having an appropriate controller for the video wall is essential and he recommends a refresh rate as high as 7680Hz for the PWM system to deal with flicker. He also said that the fill factor of the LED pixel can cause a challenge although this can be helped by diffusers, either built into the pixel or on top.
He said that he was due to test a COB solution that could help with this issue as well as making the displays more durable because the LEDs are packaged in epoxy. He suggested that the cost could vary from $1 million to $7 or $8 million. He also emphasised lighting solutions intended to integrate with RGB LEDs, the topic we discussed at a UK SMPTE meeting recently. (RGB is Not Enough for Virtual Production)
What We Think
One of these days, I’ll get to the HPA Tech Retreat. Maybe…. (BR)
