What They Say
Digitimes reports that panel prices are rising for TVs, notebooks and PC monitors partly because of restricted supply of driver and power management chips.
What We Think
Panel makers have to make the most of some respite in panel prices. As Ross Young of DSCC pointed out at the DSCC/SID Business Conference recently, panel makers have suffered nine consecutive quarters of losses. What was also clear at the conference was that as well as relatively robust demand because of working from home, and more time watching TV, the drop in supply by the Koreans is tightening supply. At the moment, prices are firm and DSCC has increased its short term forecast prices. The firm did a detailed analysis in its recent DSCC Weekly Review (subscription required) Of course, Q3 tends to be the period of maximum panel demand as brands build their inventories in anticipation of the holiday season.
