What They Say
Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys presented information on a new microLED technology that it calls Micro Clean at the recent CES show. The MC04 device is based on an RGB module that can be used to make a 135″ UltraHD display with 1,000 cd/m² and a display pitch of 0.78mm. The full device is 0.4mm x 0.4mm but the LEDs themselves are much smaller. (our estimate of the LED sizes, based on the picture supplied is around 70? x 40? – although that may not be precise)
The MC02 devices is 0.2mm square and can be used 0.63mm pitch to allow a 110″ UltraHD display with 800 cd/m².
What We Think
These are interesting devices, but a clue to one of the key challenges is power consumption. The MC04 uses 2.8KW with full white, so could be used in the UK with a 13 amp 240V supply, but not in some countries. The 110″ uses even more – 4.5kW. Clearly, in a domestic application, both would probably have to be limited in peak brightness over larger areas.
The company also gave its forecast for microLED. No source was quoted, but it looks like a useful and reasonable forecast from a company that is active in the market. (BR)
