In an agreement to cover the high demand for micro-displays, Kopin’s Lightning OLED micro-displays will be produced at Olightek’s fabrication plant in China until the joint purchase of a new OLED line is installed within the Olightek facility. The new line should be ready for production by the end of the year. Kopin and Olightek will be entitled to half each of the new production line output.
In the longer term, Kopin has a separate agreement with both BOE and Olightek and will establish a new OLED micro-display production facility in Kunming to support the growing AR and VR markets. This will be possibly the world’s largest OLED-on-silicon production line, which will be manged by BOE, and will have an annual production capacity of a million OLED micro-displays.
Total investment is estimated to be $167 million, with the majority of the money coming from BOE (76.5%) and Olightek (20%). Kopin stated that neither of its new agreements involves licensing of any Kopin technology.
