Japan Display has begun to sell small memory-in-pixel reflective colour LCD modules, for smartwatches and similar wearables. Because they are reflective, the modules consume ‘less than 0.5%’ of the power of transparent-type units.
A prototype reflective display from JDI was seen at SID 2013 (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 22). The memory-in-pixel technology means that the screen can retain a static image without power.
Samples will be available in March.
