According to a recent report from Nikkei, Japanese manufacturers are gearing up their development of bendable OLED panels. Samsung are currently developing foldable smartphones which use these displays, as are several Chinese manufacturers.
The major roadblock to the bendable OLED panel is its glass bottom layer. According to Nikkei’s article, Ube Industries and Kaneka are reportedly making great progress in their development of film substrates, while Sumitomo Chemical has apparently developed a scratch-resistant film, all designed to replace the glass layer in the OLED display, allowing it to be bent and folded.
