Japan’s Sharp bets on VR hardware as ‘metaverse’ takes off

What They Say

Nikkei reported that Sharp is beginning to benefit from the work it has done over time to develop displays for VR, especially since the Foxconn takeover in 2016. The Nikkei reported that Sharp is supplying more than a million high end VR displays per month and has become the largest supplier to Meta for the Quest 2 headset.

Unsurprisingly, the article highlighted that Foxconn sees itself having a good business as the Metaverse develops.

Separately, The Information’s Reality Check suggested that as the basic spec of the displays in the Pico Neo 3 headset match those of the Quest 2, Sharp could also be a supplier there.

What We Think

It seems to me that the speed and colour/contrast advantages of OLED, combined with a relatively low peak brightness requirement because of the low ambient light will mean that OLEDs start to dominate the VR business as it has done high end smartphones.

However, given that the Reality Check blog felt that it had to explain the pros and cons of double sourcing, it looks like pure speculation to me. (BR)
