According to UBI Research the shipment of OLEDs for tablet PCs, notebooks, and monitors is expected to grow at an annual rate of 41%, reaching 31 million units by 2027. The IT market is expected to emerge as a new high-value segment for OLEDs, an area mostly dominated by OLED sales into the smartphone market.
The research company’s projection is based on analysis of Samsung Display’s 5.5-generation and 6th-generation OLED lines, the 8.5-generation QD-OLED line, the 8.6-generation (2290 x 2620 mm2) IT line, as well as the 6th-generation OLED lines from LG Display, BOE, and Visionox.
Samsung Display was producing IT OLEDs on a limited scale at their 5.5-generation rigid OLED A2 line and a part of the 8.5-generation QD-OLED line. Starting from 2024, both Samsung Display and LG Display plan to start full-scale production of OLEDs for Apple’s iPads on their 6th-generation lines. BOE is also planning to manufacture IT OLEDs on their B12 line.
Samsung Display made an investment decision earlier this year to invest in the 8.6-generation OLED line for IT purposes. They are expected to start producing a variety of IT products, including notebooks, in the first half of 2026. Not to be outdone, both LG Display and BOE are planning to invest in the 8.6-generation line as soon as they secure investment and clientele. Visionox is also currently in discussions with major equipment suppliers for their investment in the 8.6-generation line.
