iOS Tablets Chips Away at Android Dominance in Q1 22

What They Say

Counterpoint Research said that Apple is ‘closing the gap’ with Android tablets as the market reaches saturation and with global uncertainty and negative purchasing intent (see Gartner Forecasts Worldwide PC Shipments to Decline 9.5% in 2022).

Although Apple was down in unit terms in Q1, it rose in share to 38%, up from 34% in Q4 2021 and up from 36% in Q1 2021. Android, on the other hand, hit the lowest shipments in almost two years, with 90% of the Q1 losses being for Android devices. Windows devices were also down 11% QoQ, with share growing from 5% in Q1 2021 to 6% in Q1 this year.

What We Think

Apple products tend to go to individuals with higher incomes, globally, and they have probably been and probably will be, less impacted by the geopolitical and macroeconomic challenges of 2022, so Apple may continue to gain share. iPad loyalty and brand awareness could hardly be higher. (BR)
