Inuru at CES with OLED labels

What They Say

Hat-tip to Alfred Poor, long time tech journalist and, these days, working on “Health Tech Insider” for sending me a press release from Inuru, a German company that will be at CES with its low cost IJP OLED-based labels. The firm is a partner with Noctiluca for OLED materials (Noctiluca Sets Out Its Stall for Advanced OLED Materials) and previously highlighted by Merck (Merck at SID Conference: Future-oriented Materials for Displays and More). It highlights applications such as packaging and labels to enhance brand presence at the initial contact with customers. The customized displays are controlled by sensors that can illuminate a variety of products, including:

  • Food and beverage labels that light up by touch
  • Packages that turn on by motion detection when someone comes within six feet of it
  • Medicine containers timed to flash upon its expiration or use
  • Bottles that pulse to the beat of music

There’s a video of the applications here.

What We Think

The other day, my wife was given some ‘bubble bath’ with an LED in the base – presumably just to make it stand out. Really? I feel a bit like this with these passive area OLEDs. No doubt some of the applications will be reasonable uses, but most will just be a waste of resources. At least with super thin OLEDs, there won’t be much resources! Bah, humbug! (BR)
