What They Say
At Infocomm 2021, Samsung announced new 8K signage that uses miniLED backlights in 65″, 75″ and 85″ inch sets with landscape and portrait options. The Quantum Matrix Technology Pro in the sets controls the greyscale to 12 bits of precision.
What We Think
The tag on the Samsung press release relating to the Quantum Matrix Technology Pro technology links back to the release itself and we weren’t able to dig out much to establish what the ‘Pro’ version of this miniLED implementation was. It did remind me of one of my favourite dictionary definitions. Recursion – see Recursion.
When UltraHD first came to digital signage, I forecast that it would be very slow in penetrating until the point when the panel makers no longer wanted to make FullHD. Issues of content creation, storage, distribution and of mixed resolution inventories makes higher spatial resolution a challenge in digital signage and there is really little value unless the viewer is close up. So, if I was still forecasting, I would be very sceptical of a rapid adoption of 8K. If, and it’s still a question to me, the LCD makers switched all TV panels of a certain size to 8K, then the professional market would have to follow, but I’m not convinced that is going to happen any time soon.
