India-based Rajesh Exports aims to build a $3 billion AMOLED fab in India

What They Say

Digitimes reports ($$) that an Indian trading company, Rajesh Exports, wants to build an AMOLED fab in India to take advantage of the $10 billion Semicon India Program, announced in February 2022.

Rajesh Exports is said to have a turnover of $27 billion and over 80 jewellery stores and an article here positions the firm as the largest processor of gold in the world with 35% of global gold production. The main refining capacity is in Balerna, Switzerland.

What We Think

Such a development is not impossible, but highly unlikely. By chance, I’m off to Rome in a couple of weeks, a city I first visited when advising on a once-mooted plan to build a G6 fab in Italy, between Naples and Rome. That deal foundered when the Italian banks hit some trouble, but within a few years it would have been in a difficult situation as others went to G8 and beyond. There really has to be a very serious commitment to the display industry for a long time to start this kind of development. You also need a cluster of suppliers, who will want multiple customers.
